This course will focus on the how objects acquire value and meaning in
transcultural exchange. It will examine topics such as the history of
Western classification and appropriation, the creation of authenticity,
artistic innovation and the discourses of identity, collecting culture and
cultures of collecting, the politics of tourist production, and the
staging of tournaments of value (auctions, art marketplaces).

Requirements: two research papers and class presentations.

Prerequisites: graduate status
