Anthropology | SYMBOLIC ANTHROPOLOGY
E600 | 0432 | De Mallie

Undergraduates may enroll with permission of instructor.

This seminar will examine the historical foundations of symbolic or
interpretive anthropology as practiced by David Schneider, Clifford
Geertz, and other theorists. It will also survey the variety of approaches
included under these designations and relate them to Americanist
anthropology in the broadest sense as suggested by the work of Regna
Darnell. Students will be expected to develop seminar papers that use
symbolic method to investigate specific ethnographic material related to
their particular interests.
