This course provides an introduction to the languages of Native North
America and the cultures of their speakers.  Topics to be covered include
the classification of Native American languages into families,
the methods by which the ancestral languages of these families may be
reconstructed, the relationships between linguistic areas and culture
areas, the relevance of linguistic relationships to hypotheses
concerning the peopling of the Americas, and the oral literatures Native
American groups.  Work for the course will include problems in linguistic
analysis, two response papers, and midterm and final exams.   No prior
familiarity with linguistics is assumed.
