L540 Bishops, Queens, Scholars, and Lovers: Latin Letters of the
Middle Ages. We will read a varied selection of medieval Latin
letters, with attention to the development of the epistolary genre and
the ars dictaminis, medieval habits of self-representation, and the
nature of long-distance communication in the middle ages. We will
also consider the material aspect of letter-writing, and the means by
which these letters have been preserved. Authors will include
Caesarius of Arles, Alcuin, Hildebert, Abelard, Heloise, Hildegard,
and Petrarch.
