Todd Haynes started his career as an experimental filmmaker.  An
important director in the new queer cinema movement of the 80s and 90
s, he has gone on to make major, big-budget films-most recently Far
From Heaven.  In this class we'll be looking at most of Haynes' films:
Superstar;
Poison, Dottie Gets Spanked, Safe, Velvet Goldmine and Far from
Heaven.  We'll also be looking at some of the surprising and not-so-
surprising films which Haynes cites as inspiration for his artfilms:
Jean Genet'sUn chant d'amour,  Fassbinder's Ali:Fear Eats the Soul,
Douglas Sirk's All that Heaven Allows, Max Ophuls' The Reckless
Moment, Citizen Kane, Plan 9 from Outer Space  and Russ Meyer's Beyond
the Valley of the Dolls.

Written work will include a midterm, a final exam and 2 papers.
