Communication and Culture | Christian Rhetoric and Human Sexuality
C334 | 1217 | Staff
Contemporary questions surrounding human sexuality have spurred
intense debate in American churches. This course surveys that field
of arguments across theology, politics, and popular culture. We will
investigate the rhetorical strategies embraced by various parties in
the debate. We will discuss how the relationship between different
Christian traditions and the dominant culture constrains the way
people talk about sex. And we will raise questions about the role of
religious speech in the public sphere. Topics engaged will include
the ordination of women, same-sex marriages, inclusive language, and
clergy sexual misconduct.
