Communication and Culture | Media, Globalization and Cultural Identities
C413 | 1231 | Mallapragada

This course critically examines the intersections between
globalization of media and the growth of immigrant and diasporic
communities. It focuses on the ways in which media inform the culture,
politics and identities of such communities. In doing so, the course
will engage with issues relating to nationalism, ethnicity, gender,
race, class, citizenship and the like, all of which shape a community
’s sense of identity. These issues will be analyzed within a
theoretical framework that underscore the interrelations between media
texts, institutions and audiences and cultural contexts. For example,
when dealing with the diasporic Asian Indian community in the UK, the
course will examine Indo-British films that target Indians in the UK
as well as Bollywood films emerging from India’s national film
industry, that target the diasporic community. The goal of this course
is to address the complex intertwi! ning of local, national and global
forces shaping media, migration and mobility in the contemporary
world.
