Satisfies Cultural Studies List B requirements.
This course studies the representation of reality in 19th century
and early 20th century fiction through a reading of novels and short
stories by Balza, Flaubert, Zola, Tolstoy, and Joyce, and of plays
by Ibsen and Chekhov. The course focuses on the interrelationships
between Romanticism and Realism, Realism and Naturalism, and the
Symbolist/Decadent reaction ot Realism in poetry (Baudelaire,
Verlaine, Rimbaud, Mallarme, T.S. Ellio, W.B. Yeats), fiction
(Huysmans, Wilde), and drama (Villers de l‘lsle-Adam, Strindberg).
Two take-home exams.
