East Asian Languages and Cultures | Introduction to Japanese Linguistics
J421 | 1783 | Tsujimura

Recommended: one year of Japanese, or equivalent proficiency

This course will introduce a wide range of linguistic phenomena in
Japanese, which include phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax,
semantics, language change, dialectal variation, and gender
differences. We will examine these from both the descriptive and
comparative points of view. The two goals of the course are for
students to become acquainted with the language from a linguistic
perspective, and to develop analytical skills by solving linguistic
problems pertinent to Japanese.
