This course will introduce you to the psychological and educational
foundations for counseling and guidance as well as provide an
overview of counseling theories, practices, and organization.
The goals of this class are for you to learn about and understand:
Professional roles and functions of counseling professionals
including similarities and difference with other types of helping
Professional organizations including membership benefits, activities,
service to members and current emphasis.
History of the helping professions including significant factors and
Ethical and legal standards, their evolution, methods of change,
applications to diverse populations and various professional
activities and professions including school, college, marriage and
family and mental health counseling.
Professional preparation standards: their evolution and current
applications in various settings, i.e., schools, universities,
agencies and private practice.
Professional credentialing including certification and licensure
practices and standards.
Life-long professional development and self-reflection.
Crisis intervention counseling and ethics.

You will be graded on the following: professional development
presentation/activity (15%), ethics group presentation (15%), two
tests (20% each), a professional portfolio (25%) and professional

participant in this class, engaging in lectures, asking questions and
providing feedback to your classmates.

Group Project One: Professional development is a lifelong process.
Outside of mandatory training (e.g., courses, CEUs) counselors must
be intentional about accessing resources that will help them develop
professional knowledge and also stay current in their field.
Therefore, class groups are responsible for creating and implementing
a 90-minute professional development presentation for the class in
one of the following categories: 1. School counseling, 2. Agency
counseling, 3. Private practice or, 4. Multicultural concerns. This
presentation can include guest panels, information, activities and/or
Group Project Two: Ethical decision making – During this group
exercise your group will take one of four roles: creating and
presenting an ethical dilemma, the prosecution, the defense, and the
jury. The first group will present an ethical dilemma – a case where
a potential ethical problem exists (based on research on common
ethical concerns). The second group will present an argument for the
prosecution (citing relevant ethical codes such as ACA, APA, AMHCA,
AMFT & NBCC). The third group will present an argument for the
defense (citing relevant ethical codes). The fourth group will decide
a judgment with appropriate sanctions (based on relevant ethics codes
and Indiana law).
Portfolio: You will keep a portfolio for this class. I recommend you
buy a three ring binder and begin to have a central place where you
can keep professional information. (For school counselors – please
note that the new regulations require that you keep a professional
portfolio that documents how you meet all the state standards). All
information in the portfolio must be typed. Each entry should be at
least one page typed and should be done on the day they are assigned
and brought to class for discussion with your small group.
Tests: there will be two tests in the class. The tests will be a
combination of multiple choice and short answers.
Professional Behavior: Professional behavior consists of behavior
that is consistent with counselor ethics codes and professional
organizations, is respectful of differences (e.g., culture, gender,
race, ability) and consistently aspires to the highest standards.
Being on time, being prepared and participating in class are the
minimum requirements. Absences will sabotage individual and group
progress and students are expected to notify the instructor by phone
or email if conflicts arise.
