Literatures in English, 1900-Present

1:00p-2:15p TR (30) 3 CR.

This section of E304 surveys American literature from the 1920s
through the 1950s, with glimpses of subsequent decades. We will use
the Heath anthology of American literature and also read a number of
novels, including Jack Kerouac’s On the Road, and E.L. Doctorow’s
Billy Bathgate. The course will introduce students to a large
variety of American twentieth century writers, but also allow
students to do in-depth research on a number of writers of their
choosing.

Student responsibility in the course includes a class presentation,
short papers on the readings assignments, a mid-term, and a final
exam (students can do the final as an in-class or take-home exam).
