PREREQUISITE: COMPLETION OF THE ENGLISH COMPOSITION REQUIREMENT

W103 is an introductory course in creative writing. Students will
take an apprenticeship approach to the art and craft of poetry and
fiction by examining as novice writers the work of professional
writers from diverse traditions and approaches, and by composing
original work through exercises and formal assignments. Students
meet for lecture on Mondays where the various elements of craft will
be explored through assigned readings and exercises, and again on
Wednesdays and Fridays in small groups for close reading of assigned
texts as well as discussion of original work. Course work includes
extensive reading and writing
as well as two exams.
