This course will be a survey of Italian seventeenth-century art.  The
artists of this period include some of the most alluring within the entire
European tradition.  We will discuss the enigmatic and violent art of
Caravaggio, the intensely personal work of the woman painter Artemisia
Gentileschi, the exuberant art of Pietro da Cortona, the complex and
involving architecture of Borromini, and, finally, the overarching
achievement of Gian Lorenzo Bernini, an artist capable of fusing into a
stunning whole works in the formerly distinct media of painting,
sculpture, and architecture.

Course requirements:  midterm, 5 quizzes, short research paper, final
exam.
