Fine Arts | Contemporary Art - INTENSIVE WRITING
A340 | 2308 | Bowles

Why does so much contemporary art seem provocative and confrontational?
What does art demand of us and what can we gain from a troubling or
unsettling encounter? How can we describe our experiences in writing? In a
seminar format, this course will ask questions about the role of art in
contemporary American society and under the conditions of globalization.
We will explore recent debates about the political responsibility of the
artist and the role museums, public art, and public funding for the arts
play in fostering democracy.
