Folklore | Methods & Theories
F401 | 2544 | McDowell
Class meets at 501 N. Park. The purpose of this course is to
introduce students to the main methods and theories in the two fields
composing our department, Folklore and Ethnomusicology. These fields
share a common focus on traditional forms of artistic performance,
but they diverge from one another in important ways as well. This
course explores both the common ground and some key areas of
difference, by delving into the history of inquiry and current
research paradigms; basic concepts such as community, tradition,
genre, and performance; the methods, techniques, and procedures used
to gather and process information; and the issues associated with
presenting and representing people in public settings and programs.
Required for majors and minors in the department.
