French and Italian | History of the French Language 1
F603 | 2664 | Vance

F603 provides an introduction to the external and internal history of
French. After taking stock of the historical events and social
attitudes that shaped the development of French out of Popular Latin,
we will investigate the evolution of the language itself -- the sound
system (phonology), word formation (morphology), and sentence
structure (syntax). In this first half of the 603-604 sequence, we
focus mainly on the early development (through the 13th century) and
on phonology and morphology. Diachronic study is complemented by
readings from the Old French period. Cross-listed with Linguistics and
Medieval Studies.
