Germanic Languages | Deutsch: Mittelstufe I
G300 | 2955-2958 | Staff
Prerequisite: G250 with a grade of C- or higher, an equivalent course
at another institution, or placement.
This course is designed to prepare students for subsequent 300-level
work in German language, literature, and culture. A variety of texts
will be read including one popular contemporary novel. In their oral
and written responses to the readings, it is expected that students
will demonstrate a growing awareness of--and sensitivity to-German
culture and express their ideas in a manner consistent with advanced
language work. Written assignments will be given weekly. With some
of these, students will assemble a website with an ABC of cultural
information on the city of Berlin.
Each student should own a good German-English/English-German
dictionary as well as a standard reference grammar.
Texts:
Rankin & Wells, Handbuch zur deutschen Grammatik
Patrick Süskind, Die Geschichte von Herrn Sommer
A course reader may also be required.
For G300-330, we recommend: Langenscheidt's New College German
Dictionary, Wahrig's Wörterbuch der deutschen Sprache and the Duden
Deutsches Universalwörterbuch.
