Germanic Languages | Perspectives on German Literature
G415 | 2969 | Breger

Prerequisite: G305 or G306

In this seminar, we will discuss intercultural encounters within
German (language) literature and culture, focusing on interactions
between German and Turkish-German authors, i.e. members of current
Germany’s largest minority. You will not only be introduced to some
of the most vibrant parts of Germany’s contemporary literary and
cultural scene, but also talk about issues of cultural identity and
difference, marginalization and strategies of ‘talking/writing back’
from a minority perspective. The focus of the seminar is on
contemporary literature. We will, however, read some historical
texts, in order to better understand Turkish-German relations today.
Furthermore, we will watch a couple of films, and discuss some
contemporary music and performance culture (e.g. Turkish-German hip-
hop). Assignments will include two longer papers (midterm/final) and
a couple of short essays and/or a presentation in class.
