S331 The Hispanic World I (3 credits)
Prerequisite: S310 or equivalent

Meets 1st 8-weeks: Class starts Sept. 1, 2003 and ends Oct. 24, 2003.

S331 is an introduction to Hispanic culture through literature and it
is also an introduction to the study of literature itself. Through the
reading of texts of various genres, including drama, poetry and
narrative, we will discuss diverse aspects of Spanish American culture
and study the basic components of the major literary genres. The
readings include an anthology of Hispanic literature containing poetry
and short stories, Rodolfo Usigli's play EL GESTICULADOR, and a short
novel, Carlos Fuentes's AURA. We will also watch at least one film and
consider the cinematic medium as a culturally powerful vehicle of
expression. Evaluation for the course will be based on 2 hourly exams,
a final exam, written homework assignments and compositions, and class
attendance and active participation.
