THESE TWO SECTIONS OF S332 MEETS 2nd EIGHT WEEKS ONLY!

This course will explore gender roles and issues as they are
reflected in a number of Spanish literary works and in the society
that produced them. The readings will include a twentieth-century
prose work (of Miguel de Unamuno), a drama (Tirso de Molina’s EL
BURLADOR DE SEVILLA), and a selection of poetry from medieval to
modern times (ROMANCES, poems of Bécquer, Machado, etc.). Special
attention will be given to the historical, social, cultural, and
literary background of these works.

The course, which will be conducted entirely in Spanish, has a
manifold objective: to widen the cultural horizon of the students,
to deepen their understanding of gender relationships, to sharpen
their literary insight and appreciation, and to improve their
speaking and writing abilities in Spanish.

The final grade will be determined on the basis of participation in
class discussion, written assignments, three short papers, and a
final exam.

Class will start on October 27, 2003.
