S408 Survey of Spanish Literature II
(3 credits)
Prerequisite:  S331 and S332 or equivalent

The ways in which we project ourselves in our dealings with others
may be seen as a kind of performance. In this view, actual living
persons ape literary characters or fictional archetypes rather than
the other way around. This course will explore the above hypothesis
in literature and film of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Readings will consist of narratives by Bécquer, Pardo-Bazán, Valle-
Inclán, and Rodoreda; plays by Rivas, Zorrilla, Lorca, Buero-
Vallejo, and Benet i Jornet, and a film or two, TBA.

The course will be taught in Spanish. In addition to a midterm and a
final, students will work on a research topic of their own and
produce a final presentation and paper.
