S479  Mexican Literature  (3 credits)                               	
		LITERATURE
Prerequisite:  S331 and S332 or equivalent

This course will explore some of the key trends and texts in
twentieth-century Mexican literature.  We will look at representations
of the Revolution and critiques of its failure, debates over Mexican
identity, the role of mestizaje in Mexican culture, and the increase
in literary production by women.  Readings will be primarily novels
and short stories, but we will also examine several important poems
and essays.

There will be a midterm, short paper, final paper, and presentation.

Principal texts:  Mariano Azuela, LOS DE ABAJO; Carlos Fuentes,
AURA; Juan Rulfo, PEDRO PARAMO; Carmen Boullosa, DUERME.

There will also be additional readings by Carmen Boullosa, Rosario
Castellanos, Ramón López Velarde, José Emilio Pacheco, Octavio Paz,
and Elena Poniatowska
