S417 Hispanic Poetry (3 credits) LITERATURE
Prerequisite: S331 and S332 or equivalent

This course proposes a study of major aspects, movements and
directions of Hispanic poetry from the Middle Ages to the present.
In this section we are going to explore a precise topic: how the
canon of peninsular poetry is built from the Middle Ages to the 20th
century. The course, then, will be a critical survey of the
highlights of the Spanish poetic canon, which will be twofolded:
first and mainly, we will examine and analyze the texts themselves,
emphasizing the study of their textual construction and of their
cultural and historical contextualization; secondly, we are going to
elaborate some remarks on the way in which the Spanish poetic canon
is built, and on which principles.

The final grade will be based on a midterm and a final exam, on a
number of small papers, and on a final larger paper. Active and
explicit class participation will count decisively toward the final
grade.

The course will be taught in Spanish.
