S517	Methods of Teaching College Spanish

MW 1:00pm – 2:15pm/section #4557/3 cr./Ballantine Hall 344

The best way to make decisions about how to teach language is
to know language is learned/acquired/developed and so this course
takes language learning (acquisition/development) as the starting
point. Once you appreciate how the mind works with language data,
then you can decide what is an appropriate organization for
materials, appropriate activities to foster language development,
and appropriate roles to adopt for yourself as an instructor and to
assign to the learners.

If I were to rename this course, it would be The
Psycholinguistics of Classroom Language Learning.

Required texts (3)
Lee, J. F. 2002. HISP 517 Methods of Teaching College Spanish.
Bloomington, IN: ClassPak Publishing.

Lee, J. F. 2000. Tasks and Communicating in Language
Classrooms. New York: McGraw-Hill.

Lee, J. F. and VanPatten, B. Making Communicative Language
Teaching Happen. New York: McGraw-Hill.

Possible Evaluation Criteria.

A. Tests and quizzes (necessary in my experience)
1. Midterm and final
2. unit exams (5)
3. chapter quizzes
B. Oral presentations of assigned material (coursepack)
C. Instructional homepage (create and maintain)
D. Portfolio of Original Materials
E. Observations of Other Instructors
F. Participation (can’t this be assumed at this level?)
G. Other considerations that haven’t occurred to me?(something
from your past experiences?)

Exams and quizzes (A) and oral presentations (B) are required
of all students (50% and 10%, respectively). Choosing from C-G,
each student will propose the TWO assignments they would like to
submit for 40% of grade. Choose the assignments that will MOST
benefit you at this stage of your development.
