S615 Hispanic Dialectology
MWF 9:05am – 9:55am/section #4560/3 cr./Ballantine Hall 140
This course will examine variation in New World Spanish from
several different perspectives. We will examine synchronic variation
from both a geographical and a sociolinguistic perspective. We will
also consider the historical questions surrounding the development
of American Spanish dialects as well as issues of dialect
classification. All facets of language will be included,
(phonetics/phonology, morphology, syntax, lexicon), though certainly
not in equal proportions. In addition, there will be readings in the
basics of general dialectology.
Tentative text: John M. Lipski: Latin American Spanish
There will also be readings on reserve in the library and
assignments from relevant journal literature.
Grades will be based on a final exam at the time listed in the
schedule of classes, a mid-term exam, and on assignments and
quizzes.
