S785 Seminar on Hispanic Regional Literature
Topic: Catalunya: From Rural to Urban Culture in 20th-
Century Catalan Literature
TR 1:00pm – 2:15/section #4562/3 cr./Ballantine Hall 238
This seminar will explore the construction of Catalunya in its
transition from a rural to an urban culture in novels and short
stories written in Catalan (read in translation) and in Spanish by
authors from Catalunya. Starting with early 20th-century authors
(Oller, Monserdà de Macià, Víctor Català) the course looks at 3
periods: the Civil War (Laforet, Rodoreda, María Barbal), the
transition (Luis Goytisolo, Terenci Moix, Juan Marsé) and the
autonomous Països Catalans (Carme Riera, Vázquez Montalbán, Maria
Jaén). The course focuses on the shifting representations of
Catalunya in these texts in dialogue with changing historical
parameters and linguistic politics. Topics include the concept
of "regional literature" and the politics of publishing, writing and
consuming fiction in "regional languages." Each student will produce
a seminar paper and present it to the class at the end of the
semester.
