In this seminar we shall explore a number of important social issues
in Europe ranging from the mid-ninetheenth century to the post-World
War II era. These issues may include migration and urbanization,
crime, veterans affairs, maternity and racial health, welfare and so
on. The first weeks will be devoted to common readings in these
areas and will try to explore both the practical issues of social
administration as well as the theoretical and ideological questions
that informed social policy and social policy debates. The latter
part of the course will be devoted to student-led discussions of
their research topics, and the course will culminate in the
production of an original research paper based on primary sources.
