While most of the traditional approaches to language examine
inventories of items and structures which make it up, there are many
aspects of how languages work which require to count or measure
quantities. This course will explore various examples of this sort of
approach, including the following. 1) variation in usage indicating
differences in dialect, formality, or gender, 2) constraints on
common and uncommon word shapes, 3) phonetic properties of sets of
sounds within a system. Students will develop a project of their own
choice within their area of interest.
