Introduction to generative syntax designed for graduate students.
Linguistic facts in English and other languages are closely examined.
Emphasis will be placed upon argumentation and logical thinking rather
than memorization of the facts or rules. The theoretical framework
is the "Principles and Parameters" approach, and the major areas of
inquiry are: thematic interpretation, Case marking, phrase structures,
anaphoric relations, movements and empty categories.
Course requirements: Regular attendance, regular homework and
examinations. Active participation in class discussion as well as
close reading of the text book is expected.
