Living-Learning Center | Mapping Cultures: Dynamics of Four First Nations Histories
L220 | 1080 | Kuns and Branam
As Europeans, colonists and the US Government moved across the
continent, they encountered many diverse First Nations people
(American Indians or Native Americans). How were First Peoples
perceived and represented by Europeans, colonists, and the
government? How did First Nations respond? How has this history of
representation affected living First Peoples? Using four First
Nations as examples (Iroquois, Pequot, Cherokee, and Apache) and
tracing their relationship with colonial America and the federal
government, we will explore the contexts in which knowledge about
First Nations is created and presented. The class will feature a
social mapping project at the Eiteljorg Museum in Indianapolis.
