M601: TOPICS IN MUSIC RESEARCH: TEACHING MUSIC IN NON-WESTERN
CULTURES (3 CR)
Tuesdays 6:30-9:00 PM, M344

This seminar-style course will introduce African, Asian and Native
American musics from musical and cultural perspectives. Requirements
include two presentations, one research paper and a final exam.

In the first half of the course, we will consider techniques and
approaches to “non-western” music while studying musical samples from
various world cultures. In the second half of the course, we will
apply a wide range of analytical tools to consider interactions of
western and world musics in multiple genres (concert music, popular
music, media, etc.). Through active listening, discussion, readings,
presentations and participation, students will acquire not only the
tools necessary to teach an undergraduate class in world music, but
approaches and perspectives that can inform the study of western
music as well.
