This course is an introduction to the philosophy of language. Our focus will be on the tradition that has its roots in the work of Frege and Russell. We will survey the main approaches to the topics of truth, meaning and reference. Readings will include work by Frege, Russell, Tarski, Strawson, Kripke, Putnam, Quine, and Davidson. There will be mid-term and final examinations as well as one short paper.
