From conception to death, there are changes in the physiology, mind,
and behavior of humans and other animals. Such changes are called
development. This course is about the scientific study of how and why
these changes occur over time. We will focus on development in
infancy and early childhood. During these periods, the pace and range
of change are spectacular. Our purposes will include learning some
of the results of developmental research e.g., facts about the
thinking and behavior of pre-schoolers but will more importantly
extend to understanding and evaluating the ways in which researchers
think about and investigate the processes driving change.
