Religious Studies | Introduction to the Study of Religion
R264 | 4145 | Copulsky

What is religion? How has it been defined? How have people
accounted for its nature and function in the human experience? How
should religion be studied? And what is at stake in the great
differences we find in the variety of answers that have been
supplied to these inquiries? These are some of the questions we
will struggle with in this seminar, which is designed to introduce
students to the field of Religious Studies. Students will explore
the works of influential thinkers such as Wilfred Cantwell Smith,
Emile Durkheim, Max Weber, Mircea Eliade, Sigmund Freud, Clifford
Geertz, Karl Marx, Jonathan Z. Smith.
