Sociology | Introduction to Sociology
S100 | 4263 | Heacock

Sociology is the scientific study of society and social
interactions. As such, in this course we will discuss what
sociologists study, how they study it, and what conclusions can be
drawn from these studies.
Students will develop a “sociological imagination,” and will be able
to apply it to various aspects of the world in which we live. In
doing so, we will critically examine commonly held perceptions about
and explanations for such social issues as poverty, inequality,
discrimination, racism, crime, health care, and education. We will
discuss what a sociological imagination can tell us about issues
like these as well as what solutions may be possible. Students not
only will leave this class with a knowledge of sociological
theories, concepts, and methods, but more importantly will be able
to take what they have learned and apply it to the “real world” of
their lives.
