Crime is one of the most frequently discussed social phenomena among
members of society, especially given recent high profile events such
as the Jonesboro and Paducah killings and the discussions and events
surrounding the current President. Less often do we discuss the
assumptions that lie behind discussions of crime and criminal
behavior. What is a crime? How are definitions of crime legally
and socially constructed? What do members of society consider
serious and not so serious crimes? This course will be centered
around answering questions such as these. We will take a
theoretical and empirical approach to the study of crime and
criminal behavior in society.
