Sociology | Gender Roles
S338 | 4312 | Sweeney
OPEN TO UNDERGRADUATES ONLY
This course is designed to give students a better understanding of
cultural constructions of gender and how they shape our lives. We
will cover many debates related to gender, including discussions of
the origin of gender hierarchies, social and behavioral
similarities/differences between females and males, and the degree
that biological, psychoanalytic, psychological and sociological
perspectives help us to understand these differences. Special
attention is given to the learning process, the creation and
perpetuation of gender stereotypes, and the consequences of gender
inequality. Many aspects of U.S. society will be examined,
including education, work, family, law, and the media, while cross-
cultural comparisons will also be a major focus of the course.
Objectives will be met through lectures, readings, films, and
personal experiences.
