This course covers the impact of severe-to-profound hearing loss on
listeners’ spoken language processing and discusses rehabilitative
technologies available for adults and children with this degree of
hearing loss. Special emphasis is given to the use of cochlear
implants by adults and children. Topics include cochlear implant
technology and speech processing, cochlear implant candidacy,
surgical and medical considerations, results and outcomes in pre- and
postlingually deafened listeners, aural rehabilitation, and the
impact of cochlear implantation on Deaf culture.
