This course focuses on key issues underlying the relationship
between society and the environment and the challenges we face in
the 21st.Century. We will use a seminar format (lecture, readings,
and group discussions) to discuss the evolution of the international
environmental movement, as well as topics related to population
growth, consumption, and environmental change, global climate
change, institutions and common pool resources, and current trends
in sustainable development. We will use material from anthropology,
as well as geography and biology, political science, sociology, and
other disciplines. Following up introductory lectures, we will
organize readings and discussion for each of the topics above.
Readings  will include book chapters and a set of papers for each
topic. Films will be used for particular topics. Evaluation based
on: student's class participation, assignment of readings and
discussion preparation, a final paper on a topic to be discussed
with the instructor.
