Readings in Medieval Latin
CLAS-L409 , 25595 , Balint

This course will survey the poetry and prose written in Latin from
Jerome (c. 400) to the Carmina Burana (c. 1230). We’ll read
excerpts from the Vulgate Bible, biographies, miracle tales, love
poems, letters, histories, riddles, visions, and satires, and
discuss the ever-changing literary culture of the Middle Ages. We
will also become acquainted with the way Latin, the universal
language of the Medieval West, was used, changed, and occasionally
abused, when it was no longer anyone’s native language.
