Fulfills COAS S & H distribution requirement

This course will provide a critical survey of the representation of
women in the mass media, with an emphasis on film. We will examine
how the film medium has constructed certain images of women both
historically and aesthetically. The course will provide an
introduction into theoretical discourses surrounding women and the
media. We’ll develop our understanding of these theories through
their application to both mainstream representations of women and
interventionist works that critique those conventional
representations. The screenings will draw from a range of media,
including early cinema, classical Hollywood, documentary, avant-
garde films, foreign films, as well as some contemporary Hollywood
films and television shows. Assignments may involve online postings,
exams, and a final paper.
