This course will introduce you to the key issues relating to media
globalization. In particular, it will address issues of media texts,
audiences, institutions and cultural contexts in South Asia and the
South Asian diaspora around the world. Some of the themes that will
be discussed include the role of South Asian television and film in
a global context, the immensely successful and increasingly popular
Bollywood film, the emergent diasporic film industry represented
through films like Monsoon Wedding, American Desi and Bend it Like
Beckham and the role of the Web and popular music in creating
transnational South Asian cultures. The objective of this course is
to examine the complexity and contradictions of globalization by
focusing on the specific cultural contexts shaping South Asia and
its diasporas.

•	The readings for this course will include theoretical and
analytical pieces that examine specific themes and aspects of South
Asian and South Asian diasporic media.
•	The course will be a combination of lecture and discussion
and screenings.
•	Students have to do a research paper and presentation during
the semester.
•	Readings will include the scholarship of Chris Barker,
Purnima Mankekar, George Lipsitz, Patricia Uberoi, Arjun Appadurai
and Jigna Desai.
•	The final grade will depend on performance in the following
assignments:
(1)	Class Participation (2) Mid term Exam (3) Final Exam (4)
Research Paper and (5) Class Presentation of Research Project.
