Communication and Culture | Introduction to Media Theory and Aesthetics

This course is dedicated to the study of classical and contemporary
media theory.  Readings will include articles on formal film
aesthetics by Eisenstein, Vertov, Bazin, Brecht and Godard;
psychoanalytic feminist film theory; and essays by historically
important cultural studies writers like Adorno and Benjamin.  In
addition we’ll read material from more contemporary cultural and
media theorists: Stuart Hall on race and ideology, McLuhan on the
medium as message, Baudrillard and Jameson on postmodernism,
Habermas on public space, Dash on African-centered cinema, Sconce
and Bourdieu on trash and trash aesthetics, and contemporary writers
on gender and queer theory. We’ll also talk about advertising, TV,
the news, video, CD-Roms, laser discs, DVDs new technologies and
home viewing. Course work will include one short paper, a conference
abstract, an oral presentation and a long research paper.
