C501/C502 is an introduction to modern literary study as it
pertains to comparative literature. The course surveys both
traditional and contemporary approaches to literature. While
introducing key issues of literary inquiry in the modern
university, the course will consistently examine these issues in
relation to the history of comparative literature as a discipline
and the nature of comparative literature today. Historical and
theoretical ways of thinking about literature will be given equal
emphasis. Also introduced as areas of study are the
metarelationships of literature with other fields, including the
other arts, aesthetics, history, psychology, and the social
sciences.
