East Asian Languages and Cultures | Seminar in Traditional Chinese Literature
C651 | 25621 | Bokenkamp

Topic: Literature from the reign of Wu Zhao (684-705)

As the only woman to rule under her own name as “child of heaven,”
Wu Zhao has held a fascination for Western historians. Despite much
valuable work, a good portion of the literary legacy of her rule
remains to be assessed. This seminar will be dedicated to research
into those literary remains, to include religious writings,
epigraphy, poetry, and rhapsodies.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of Literary Chinese and C 511,
or the consent of the instructor. Students are urged to consult
with the instructor before 1 May 2004 to obtain the reading list for
the course.
