2:30p-3:45p TR (30 students) 3 CR.

PREREQUISITES: W103, W203, or L205 or permission of the instructor.

This is a course in poetic form. You will learn how to measure lines of verse, practicing composition of blank verse and syllabic verse before moving on to composing received forms such as the sonnet, the villanelle, the sestina, the pantoum, the ballad, the blues, etc. We will also look at various stanza forms, considering the ode and the elegy. Exercises in free verse and the prose poem will also be assigned. Class time will alternate between discussion of model poems from course texts and workshops on student-composed exercises. Students will also be asked to make two short class presentations, one on the work of a poet and one on some aspect of prosody. Some memorization will be required.
