Fine Arts | 19th Century Painting 2
A441 | 25927 | Facos

This course will consider the seismic transformations in European
culture and society in the second half of the 19th century as
manifested in painting. Urbanization, political tensions, improved
travel and communications, the repression of women, and the quest
for ‘truth’ were just a few of the factors affecting artistic
production, from London to Moscow and Stockholm to Madrid. By
examining works by Impressionists, Preraphaelities, Symbolists,
Realists, and maverick artists throughout Europe in their proper
contexts, we will come to a better understanding of the complexities
that gave rise to the world in which we now live. Requirements
include: 3 quizzes, short papers, discussion participation, and a
final exam.
