18th Century England & Germany: Background to 19th Century Art
(Problems in Art Theory 3)

The seminar will address 18th century German and English artistic
theories which were basic to the rise of new movements in 19th
century French art. The readings will include writings of the
period in the fields of literature, philosophy and art. Both
Germany and Britain opened up fresh approaches away fro the
entrenched French Neoclassicism through the development of such
visual categories as “Gothicism”, as well as those of the “Sublime”
and the “Picturesque” which, on the continent, lie at the heart of
Romanticism, Realism and even Impressionism.
