French and Italian | Reading and Expression in French
F300 | 5848 | Prof. Guillaume Ansart

This course is an introduction to reading French literature and is
taught in French. We will read stories (Flaubert's Un Coeur
simple, Camus' L'Hôte) and short novels (Balzac's Le
Colonel Chabert, Mérimée's Carmen, Gide's La Symphonie
pastorale) exploring various facets of the question of identity.
We will watch film adaptations of Le Colonel Chabert and La
Symphonie pastorale. We will also read short lyric poems dealing
with the nature of art and poetry, and the function of the poet.
Students will write three short papers and take a final exam.
