French and Italian | Reading and Expression in French-Honors

This section open to Honors College students only. This course is a
general introduction to the four major genres of French literature,
poetry, theatre, short stories and novel. The course also teaches
students how to write the French explication de texte as well as
other, more traditional writing assignments such as compositions on
literary topics, and the basics of French poetic versification. This
semester we will study a selection of poems, followed by short stories
from Annie Saumont's Aldo, mon ami et autres nouvelles, then
Albert Camus' two plays Caligula and Le Malentendu, and
finally the novel by Amélie Nothomb Stupeur et tremblements.
The course will be conducted entirely in French with all discussions,
reading assignments and written work in French.
